What Could Have Been

As co-creator, writer and universe creator on the Too Many Heroes project, it was the latter of the two which were my more 'veiled' of the responsibilities. Arguably the aspect that nobody sees -- generally assuming that the 'writer,' is the one who is writes the text and flavour-text on the cards, and perhaps in addition to the rulebook. This wasn't too unexpected given the unconventional approach we were taking to the game, and what I had in mind with The Universe as whole.

Apart from writing 100 hero bios, 15 villain bios, in addition to multiple corporate identities, I was responsible for creating an entire universe, of which I designed to the point of origin preceding the Big Bang (ideas of which I had been exploring and developing generally.) It was with Too Many Heroes, that a potential presented itself, wherein these elements in addition to the world could be crafted with the intention of expanding to other media (entailing web content, TV, films, video games, and VR.) Furthermore, becoming a living breathing meta-universe, persistent and constantly evolving in an 'open source' manner, (which I dubbed Phase 2.5) a meta-narrative that intended to pool and included talent from across the globe, giving them a platform (and world) to tell their stories, in effect a safe environment for proxy narratives.

This is a fairly mammoth task for one person, which is nothing new as a one-man studio, as I'm highly capable of wearing multiple hats without any support. However, with scant to no positive feedback loops, it was on this project that I reached a breaking point.

From a part time endeavour, the momentum reeled into what eventually became a full time job (in addition to having to pick up the slack,) all without any of the positive feedback or reward (only serving to magnify underlying problems of [trying] to work in Bangkok, almost 20 years.)

The project itself was a high stress one, whether it was politics, over-social requirements, issues with artists and/or project management. Of the many that I have been part of, it was the first where I ended up with callouses on my eyelids. Needless to say it exacerbated anxiety issues. Foolishly putting aside dealing with other issues (erroneously believing I didn't have the time,) I ended up doing some serious damage, which I've only started to recover from at the time of this writing. It was a project I genuinely believed in, and figured it could possibly influence some manner of change in the current state of the world for the better.

Given the direction in the late phases of development, nearing the completion of the game in quarter 3 of 2019, numerous unforeseen project delays and creative differences emerged. Regardless of such, the tabletop card game itself is complete, with solid mechanics, providing mileage of chaotic fun across the board (as witnessed repeatedly in numerous playtesting and sessions of play.)

As a result of this closure, with the responsibilities and ownership of the universe rights, I have since reclaimed and adapted some of what I had created for this project into a new universe.

Please find in the following pages, the original concepts from the 'Too Many Heroes - [Primary] Universe Bible' which I created, designed to be an ever-expanding and evolving document, much like a real universe.

As a result, please excuse any typos and grammatical errors, as it was still in active development, and the information is presented 'as is,' (except where otherwise noted.)
